Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport at a glance
Lyon Saint-Exupéry is the main airport of the Lyon region and one of the largest in France outside Paris. It lies in the countryside east of Lyon, about 25 kilometres from the city centre, and offers flights to destinations across Europe, North Africa and beyond.
For travellers based in Geneva or heading to the Alps, Lyon airport is a useful alternative to Geneva Airport: a different choice of destinations and airlines, sometimes better fares, and a backup when a flight to Geneva is cancelled or diverted. Next to the terminals, the Lyon Saint-Exupéry TGV station also links the airport to the French high-speed rail network.
For Geneva Transfer Booking, Lyon airport is a regular destination in both directions: from Geneva to catch a flight, and from Lyon back to Geneva, the lake or the ski resorts after landing.
A short history
The airport opened in 1975 under the name Lyon-Satolas, after the village nearby. In 2000, for the centenary of his birth, it was renamed after Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the aviator and author of *The Little Prince*, who was born in Lyon in 1900.
In 1994, the airport received its TGV station, designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava. Its steel and glass roof, shaped like a bird spreading its wings, has become one of the best-known modern buildings of the region.
When travellers use Lyon instead of Geneva
- A flight that only leaves from Lyon, or a better connection or fare.
- A cancelled or diverted flight: when fog, snow or a strike disrupts Geneva Airport, flights are sometimes diverted to Lyon, and passengers need a way back to Geneva.
- Arriving for the Alps: travellers landing in Lyon can be driven directly to Geneva, Annecy or the ski resorts of Haute-Savoie.
- A business trip to Lyon itself, with meetings in the city or at the exhibition centre.
From Geneva to Lyon airport: the route
The trip covers about 150 kilometres. Google calculates about an hour and forty minutes without traffic. The route crosses the border at the edge of Geneva and follows the French motorways through the Ain department, past Bellegarde and Nantua, through the southern hills of the Jura, then across the plain towards the east of Lyon, where the airport stands. Your chauffeur adapts the route to traffic and weather.
Allow a comfortable margin before your flight: we usually recommend arriving at the airport two hours before a European flight and three hours before a long-haul flight, unless your airline advises otherwise.
The border and formalities
Lyon airport is in France. The car crosses the border between Switzerland and France on the way. Both countries are in the Schengen area: there is usually no passport check on the road, but customs controls are possible. Each passenger must carry a valid passport or identity card, as for any flight.
French motorway tolls apply on this route. Ask us when booking how they are included in your quote.
Pick-up at Lyon airport
When you land in Lyon, your chauffeur waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal with a sign showing your name. Give us your flight number when booking: your chauffeur follows the landing time, adapts to delays, helps you with your luggage and walks with you to the car park.
If your flight to Geneva has been diverted to Lyon, call us: we organise a car as quickly as possible, depending on availability.
The TGV station
The Lyon Saint-Exupéry TGV station is connected to the terminals by a covered walkway. High-speed trains link it to Paris, Marseille, the south of France and other cities. A tram service also runs between the airport and the Part-Dieu station in central Lyon. For travellers coming from Paris or the south by train, a pick-up at the station can be a good way to reach Geneva or the Alps.
Lyon, a city worth a stop
Lyon is often called the gastronomic capital of France. Its historic district, Vieux Lyon, with its Renaissance houses and its traboules, passages through buildings and courtyards, is listed by UNESCO. The Fourvière basilica overlooks the city, and the meeting of the Rhône and Saône rivers gives Lyon its character. Every year around 8 December, the Fête des Lumières lights up the city's buildings and squares.
If you have time before or after your flight, we can drive you to the city centre for a meal or a visit; tell us when booking.
At the table
Lyon's traditional restaurants, the bouchons, serve hearty local dishes: quenelles with crayfish sauce, the salade lyonnaise with bacon and a poached egg, sausages and cervelle de canut, a herb cheese spread. The wines of Beaujolais, to the north, and of the Côtes du Rhône, to the south, are never far away. The covered market Les Halles Paul Bocuse is named after the famous chef.
