City tours and excursions at a glance
Geneva is a compact city, but its sights are spread between the Old Town, the lake shore and the international district, and the most beautiful places of the region lie an hour or so away: the vineyards of Lavaux, the castle of Chillon, Gruyères, Annecy or Chamonix. With a private driver, you see more in a day, without timetables, parking or changes of train.
Geneva Transfer Booking offers half-day tours of Geneva and full-day excursions in the Lake Geneva region and the Alps. You choose the places and the pace; your driver plans the route, waits at every stop and adapts the programme as the day goes on.
How a tour with a private driver works
You book by the hour, for a half-day or a full day. Before the tour, tell us what interests you: history, wine, nature, shopping, photography, or a mix. We suggest an itinerary with realistic times. On the day, your driver collects you at your hotel or residence, drives you from one place to another and waits while you visit.
The driver is not a licensed tourist guide, but knows the region well and can suggest viewpoints, restaurants and quiet places. If you would like a guided visit of a museum or a town, you can book a local guide separately and we adapt the schedule.
Geneva in half a day
A half-day is enough to see the essentials of Geneva:
- The Old Town, with its narrow streets, St Pierre Cathedral, where John Calvin preached during the Reformation, and the view from its towers.
- The Reformation Wall in the Parc des Bastions, with the statues of the great reformers.
- The lake shore, the Jet d'Eau, which rises about 140 metres above the water, and the Flower Clock in the English Garden.
- The international district, with the Palais des Nations, the European seat of the United Nations, the Broken Chair sculpture on the Place des Nations, and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum.
- Carouge, a small town with an Italian feel, built in the 18th century by the King of Sardinia, with its squares, artisans and cafés.
Guided tours of the Palais des Nations require a valid passport or identity card and are subject to opening times; check them before your visit.
CERN and the Geneva countryside
On the edge of Geneva, CERN, the European laboratory for particle physics, welcomes visitors at its Science Gateway, with exhibitions for all ages. The tour can continue through the Geneva countryside, where wine villages such as Satigny, Dardagny and Russin produce the wines of the canton, and some cellars welcome visitors for tastings. Check the opening times before your visit.
Lavaux, Chillon and Montreux
The most popular full-day excursion follows the northern shore of the lake:
- The Lavaux vineyards, terraces built on the steep slopes between Lausanne and Montreux, listed by UNESCO, with wine cellars and villages overlooking the water.
- The Château de Chillon, a medieval castle built on a rock in the lake, near Montreux, one of the most visited historic monuments in Switzerland.
- Montreux, its flower-lined promenade and the statue of Freddie Mercury.
- On the way, Nyon and its Roman remains, Coppet and its castle, or Lausanne and the Olympic Museum.
Gruyères, Annecy and Chamonix
- Gruyères: a medieval town on a hill, its castle, and the cheese dairy where you can watch Gruyère being made. Chocolate lovers can add the chocolate factory at Broc nearby.
- Annecy: across the French border, the old town with its canals, the Palais de l'Isle and the clear lake, often called the Venice of the Alps.
- Chamonix: at the foot of Mont Blanc, with the Aiguille du Midi cable car and the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace glacier, depending on weather and opening.
For excursions into France, each passenger should carry a valid passport or identity card.
Two sample itineraries
Geneva in half a day. Start in the Old Town and St Pierre Cathedral, walk down to the Reformation Wall, then drive along the lake to the Jet d'Eau and the Flower Clock. Continue to the Palais des Nations and the Broken Chair, and finish with a coffee in Carouge.
A full day on the Swiss Riviera. Leave Geneva in the morning along the lake, with a short stop in Nyon or Coppet. Spend late morning in the Lavaux vineyards, with lunch overlooking the water. In the afternoon, visit the Château de Chillon, then walk along the Montreux promenade before driving back to Geneva in the early evening.
Planning your day
- Start early for full-day excursions, especially in summer, to avoid crowds at Chillon and Chamonix.
- Check the weather for mountain trips; your driver can switch to a lake programme if the summits are in the clouds.
- Book tickets for popular attractions in advance when possible.
- Plan lunch: a terrace in Lavaux, a fondue in Gruyères or fish from the lake are part of the experience.
Advice by type of traveller
First-time visitors. Combine a half-day in Geneva with a full day in Lavaux and Chillon.
Families. Children enjoy the Jet d'Eau, the Chillon dungeons and the cheese dairy. Ask for child seats with the children's ages.
Wine lovers. Lavaux and the Geneva countryside offer tastings, and nobody needs to drive afterwards.
Business travellers with a free afternoon. A short tour of the Old Town and the lake fits between two meetings.
Photographers. Your driver knows the viewpoints and waits while you take your time.
Vehicles
A Mercedes E-Class suits one to three passengers; the S-Class offers the most comfort. For families and small groups, the V-Class takes up to six or seven passengers. For larger groups, the Sprinter is available on request.
