Megève at a glance
Megève is a Savoyard village with a medieval centre, a church square, horse-drawn carriages and wooden chalets, set on a sunny pass between the Arly valley and the Mont Blanc massif. It is one of the most elegant resorts of the French Alps, known for its gentle slopes, its chalet hotels, its fine restaurants and its relaxed atmosphere, far from the high-rise resorts.
For Geneva Transfer Booking, Megève is a short and popular transfer from Geneva Airport, for families, couples and groups of friends, in winter and in summer.
A short history
Megève was a farming village until the 1920s, when the Rothschild family chose it to create a French alternative to the fashionable Swiss resort of St. Moritz. Hotels and chalets followed, and the village quickly attracted a sophisticated clientele from Paris and abroad. Megève has kept this heritage: careful architecture in wood and stone, a pedestrian centre and a strong sense of hospitality.
When to come
Winter, from December to April, is the main season, with crowds during the Christmas and February holidays. Megève's slopes are often sunny and suit intermediate skiers and families well. Summer brings walks, mountain biking, golf and outdoor events in the village. Spring and autumn are quieter, with some hotels and lifts closed.
From Geneva Airport to Megève: the route
The trip covers about 90 kilometres. Google calculates about an hour and twenty minutes without traffic. The route crosses into France at the edge of Geneva and follows the motorway towards Chamonix as far as Sallanches, then climbs the road to Combloux and Megève, with views of Mont Blanc. On winter Saturdays, traffic can be heavy; we plan the departure accordingly.
Our vehicles run on winter tyres and carry chains, and our chauffeurs check the road reports before leaving.
The border and formalities
Megève is in France. The car crosses the border between Switzerland and France on the way. Both countries are in the Schengen area: there is usually no passport check, but customs controls are possible. Each passenger must carry a valid passport or identity card.
