Avoriaz at a glance
Avoriaz looks like no other ski resort. Built from the mid-1960s on a cliff at about 1,800 metres above Morzine, it was designed as a single architectural project: angular buildings clad in red cedar shingles, shaped to echo the rocks and the mountain around them. Seen from the valley, the resort seems to grow out of the cliff.
The other defining feature is that Avoriaz is car-free. Cars stay in the car parks at the entrance; inside the resort, people move on skis, on foot, by snowcat taxi or by horse-drawn sleigh. Most residences are ski-in, ski-out, and the snow reaches the doorsteps all winter.
Avoriaz sits at the heart of the Portes du Soleil, the vast linked ski area shared between France and Switzerland. For Geneva Transfer Booking, it is a classic family destination: easy skiing from the door, children's areas, and reliable snow thanks to the altitude.
A short history
Avoriaz was born in the 1960s from the idea of Jean Vuarnet, the French downhill champion of the 1960 Olympic Games, who came from Morzine. With a group of young architects, the project set out to build a resort that would blend into the mountain instead of imposing concrete blocks on it, and to keep cars out completely. The first buildings opened at the end of the 1960s.
For twenty years, from the 1970s to the 1990s, Avoriaz also hosted an international festival of fantasy films, which brought film directors and actors to the snow every January. Today the resort's architecture is recognised as a landmark of 20th-century mountain design.
When to come
The altitude gives Avoriaz one of the longest seasons of the Portes du Soleil, usually from December to April. The French school holidays in February are the busiest period, and Saturdays bring the most traffic on the road up from Morzine. January and March are quieter. In summer, from late June to early September, the resort opens for walkers, bikers and families, and the water park stays open in both seasons.
From Geneva Airport to Avoriaz: the route
The trip covers about 100 kilometres. Google calculates about an hour and fifty minutes without traffic, the time it takes to reach the resort's arrival area. On Saturdays in high season, the valley roads are busier and we plan accordingly.
The route crosses into France after the airport, follows the A40 motorway towards Cluses and climbs through the valleys to Morzine. From Morzine, a mountain road of about fourteen kilometres climbs to Avoriaz with a series of bends and wide views. In winter it is cleared and treated, but conditions can change quickly; our vehicles run on winter tyres and carry chains, and our chauffeurs check the reports before leaving.
Arriving in a car-free resort
The road ends at the arrival area and car parks at the entrance to Avoriaz. This is where your chauffeur stops. From there, luggage continues to the residences by snowcat taxi or horse-drawn sleigh, depending on where you stay. Many residence and rental agencies organise this service; check with yours before you travel, and tell us the name of your residence so that we drop you at the right point.
Your chauffeur unloads the luggage and helps you to the taxi area. For the return, we agree a meeting time at the same arrival area, with some margin for the luggage transfer from your residence.
The border and formalities
If you leave from the Swiss side of Geneva Airport, the car crosses into France shortly after departure. Both countries are in the Schengen area: there is usually no passport check, but customs controls are possible. Carry a valid passport or identity card for every passenger.
Winter: skiing from the door
Avoriaz opens directly onto the slopes. Families find gentle runs around the resort, and the high plateaus give long, sunny skiing. Confident skiers head for the border and the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil, through Les Crosets and Champéry. The Swiss Wall at Chavanette, a steep mogul run on the border, is a famous challenge.
Avoriaz was one of the first French resorts to build snow parks for snowboarders and freestylers, and it remains a reference for them. For children, the resort has a dedicated children's village with ski school and activities.
The altitude usually gives a long season, from December to April, with snow on the doorstep when the valley resorts are thin.
Summer in Avoriaz
In summer the resort becomes a quiet base for walkers and mountain bikers. Trails lead to the Lac de Montriond below and to mountain pastures above, and bikes ride the lift-served trails of the Portes du Soleil. The indoor water park, Aquariaz, with its tropical decor, is popular with families in every season.

At the table
Avoriaz has mountain restaurants on the slopes and in the resort, serving Savoyard classics such as tartiflette, fondue and raclette, as well as more international cuisine. In the evening, the resort is quiet and walkable, with no traffic.
Advice by type of traveller
Families. The car-free resort is ideal with children, but plan the luggage transfer from the arrival area. Ask for child seats in the car, giving ages.
Groups. With several apartments, give us the residence names; we will drop everybody at the same arrival point and keep the group's luggage together.
Snowboarders and freestylers. Board bags travel easily in a V-Class.
Late arrivals. On late flights, check the opening hours of your residence's luggage service, and tell us your landing time.
Vehicle, luggage and skis
A Mercedes E-Class suits one to three passengers with suitcases; the S-Class offers the most comfort. With skis and a week of luggage, the V-Class is the right choice, for up to six or seven passengers. For larger groups, the Sprinter is available on request.
