Yvoire at a glance

Yvoire is a medieval village on a point of land that juts into Lake Geneva, on the French shore, between Geneva and Thonon. Its stone houses, fortified gates and narrow lanes covered with flowers have earned it a place among the "most beautiful villages of France". In summer, geraniums hang from every window, boats rock in the small harbour, and the lake stretches out on three sides.

The village is small and can be explored on foot in an hour, but it is easy to spend a whole day there: the garden of the five senses, a lunch of lake fish on a terrace, a walk along the shore, or a boat trip across to Nyon on the Swiss side.

For Geneva Transfer Booking, Yvoire is above all a half-day or day trip from Geneva, often combined with Évian or Thonon, and a popular setting for small weddings and photo shoots.

A short history

Yvoire was fortified at the beginning of the 14th century by Count Amadeus V of Savoy, during the wars between Savoy and the Dauphiné. He built the castle and the walls to control navigation on the lake. Several gates, parts of the ramparts and the castle keep still stand today, and the layout of the medieval village has hardly changed.

For centuries, Yvoire lived from fishing and farming. In the 20th century, the village chose to preserve its heritage and to cover itself with flowers, which has made it one of the most visited villages of the Lake Geneva region.

When to come

Yvoire is at its best from spring to autumn, when the flowers are in bloom and the garden of the five senses is open. Summer is busy, especially at weekends; arriving in the morning or late afternoon gives a calmer visit. In winter, many shops and restaurants close and the village is very quiet, which has its own charm on a clear day by the lake.

From Geneva Airport to Yvoire: the route

The trip covers about 30 kilometres. Google calculates about fifty minutes without traffic. The route crosses into France east of Geneva and follows country roads through the villages of the Chablais to the lake shore. On summer weekends, the roads near the village and its car parks are busy.

The medieval centre is closed to cars. Your chauffeur drops you near the entrance of the village and waits nearby or comes back at the agreed time.

The border and formalities

Yvoire is in France. If you leave from the Swiss side of Geneva Airport, the car crosses the border on the way. Switzerland and France are in the Schengen area: there is usually no passport check, but customs controls are possible. Each passenger should carry a valid passport or identity card.

The garden of the five senses

The Jardin des Cinq Sens was created in the former kitchen garden of the castle. It is laid out as a plant labyrinth, with rooms devoted to touch, taste, smell, sight and hearing, among aromatic plants, flowers and old varieties of fruit trees. It is one of the most visited gardens in the region and usually opens from spring to autumn.

The lake and the boats

The small harbour of Yvoire is a stop for the lake's passenger boats. In season, boats cross to Nyon, on the Swiss shore, in about twenty minutes, and connect Yvoire with Geneva and Lausanne. A boat trip one way and a car the other is a pleasant way to discover both shores of the lake.

What to see in and around Yvoire

  • The medieval gates and the ramparts.
  • The castle, which belongs to a private family and is seen from outside.
  • The Jardin des Cinq Sens.
  • The harbour and the lakeside walk.
  • The beach of Excenevex, one of the rare natural sandy beaches of the lake, a few minutes away.
  • The Domaine de Rovorée, a protected natural park on the shore.
  • Nyon, on the Swiss shore, by boat.

At the table

Yvoire is famous for perch fillets from the lake, often served with chips and a lemon butter sauce, and for other lake fish such as féra. The terraces near the harbour serve them with local white wines. In summer, booking a table is wise.

Advice by type of traveller

Half-day visitors from Geneva. Leave in the morning, visit the village and the garden, have lunch by the lake and return in the early afternoon.

Couples and weddings. The village is a romantic setting; we drive couples and guests and wait during the photos.

Families. Children enjoy the labyrinth garden and the beach of Excenevex.

Combined trips. Yvoire combines well with Évian or Thonon along the lake.

Vehicle and comfort

A Mercedes E-Class suits one to three passengers; the S-Class offers the most comfort. For families and small groups, the V-Class takes up to six or seven passengers. For larger groups, the Sprinter is available on request. For a half-day with waiting time, an hourly booking is usually the simplest option.
