Évian-les-Bains at a glance
Évian-les-Bains lies on the French, southern shore of Lake Geneva, in Haute-Savoie, facing Lausanne on the other side of the water. Its name is known all over the world thanks to the mineral water bottled here, which filters slowly through the glacial sands of the plateau above the town before reaching its springs.
The town has kept the atmosphere of a Belle Époque resort: a promenade along the lake, palace hotels on the hillside, a casino, gardens and grand buildings from the early 20th century. It is also a place for sport and events, with a golf course that hosts an international women's championship, and a starting point for walks in the Chablais mountains.
For Geneva Transfer Booking, Évian is a classic destination for hotel and spa guests, golf tournament visitors, seminars and weddings, as well as day trips along the lake.
A short history
According to local tradition, Évian's fortune began at the end of the 18th century, when a nobleman drinking regularly from a spring in the town felt his health improve. The water's reputation spread, a first bottling began, and in the 19th century Évian became a fashionable spa town, visited by European aristocracy.
The Belle Époque left the town its finest buildings: the former thermal establishment, now the Palais Lumière exhibition centre, the old pump room, the casino, and palace hotels high above the lake. In 1962, Évian entered world history when the agreements that ended the Algerian War were signed here.
When to come
Évian is pleasant all year. Spring and summer are the high season, with the lake promenade, the boats to Lausanne, the golf and the open-air events. The international women's golf championship usually takes place in summer and fills the hotels. Autumn is calm and colourful. In winter, the town is quiet, and the ski resorts of the Chablais, such as Thollon-les-Mémises and the Portes du Soleil, are within reach.
From Geneva Airport to Évian: the route
The trip covers about 50 kilometres. Google calculates about an hour and ten minutes without traffic. The route crosses into France east of Geneva and follows the southern shore of the lake through Thonon-les-Bains, a busy road with towns and roundabouts. On summer weekends and at rush hour, traffic along the shore can be heavy, and we plan the departure time accordingly.
The border and formalities
Évian is in France. If you leave from the Swiss side of Geneva Airport, the car crosses the border on the way. Switzerland and France are in the Schengen area: there is usually no passport check, but customs controls are possible. Each passenger should carry a valid passport or identity card.
The water and the spa tradition
The famous water is bottled in a modern plant outside the town, but in the centre, the Cachat spring still flows freely for anyone to taste. The thermal tradition continues in the spa of the town and in the hotels, which offer treatments and wellness programmes. Many guests combine a stay in Évian with spa days.
The lake, the boats and the Belle Époque
The lakeside promenade, with its gardens and views over the water, is the heart of the town. Boats of the lake's navigation company cross to Lausanne-Ouchy in about half an hour, a pleasant way to visit the Swiss shore without driving. Some of these boats are historic paddle steamers. A small funicular, restored and open again, links the lower town to the upper districts and the hotels on the hillside.
Golf and events
The Évian golf course, on the hillside above the town, hosts a major international women's golf championship each year, one of the most important tournaments of the season. During that week, we handle transfers for guests, partners and teams between Geneva Airport, the hotels and the course.
