Villars-sur-Ollon at a glance
Villars-sur-Ollon sits on a sunny plateau at about 1,250 metres in the Vaud Alps, above the Rhône valley and facing the jagged peaks of the Dents du Midi. It belongs to the commune of Ollon, in the canton of Vaud, and is one of the closest Swiss mountain resorts to Lake Geneva.
The village has a double identity. It is a family ski and summer resort, linked with Gryon and Les Diablerets in one ski area. It is also home to internationally known boarding schools, which bring students and families from all over the world throughout the school year. That mix gives Villars a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere outside the holiday weeks.
For Geneva Transfer Booking, Villars is a regular destination in every season: skiers in winter, walkers and golfers in summer, and students and parents at the start and end of each term.
A short history
Villars began as a mountain village of farmers and woodcutters. At the end of the 19th century, its sunny position and clear air attracted the first hotels and visitors from the cities of the lake. A cog railway was built to link the plain to the village and, later, to the Bretaye plateau above, which became the heart of the ski area.
In the 20th century, Villars developed as a family resort rather than a high-altitude ski station. After the Second World War, boarding schools settled on the plateau, attracted by the setting and the healthy climate, and they shaped the international character the village still has today.
When to come
The ski season usually runs from mid-December to early April, with the busiest weeks around Christmas, New Year and the February holidays. In summer, from June to September, the plateau is green and mild, ideal for walking, mountain biking and golf. For boarding school families, the busiest moments on the road are the start of the school year in late August and September, the end of each term and the holidays.
From Geneva Airport to Villars: the route
The trip covers about 120 kilometres. Google calculates about an hour and a half without traffic. The route stays in Switzerland: the motorway follows Lake Geneva past Lausanne and the Lavaux vineyards, turns into the Rhône valley at Villeneuve, and leaves the motorway near Aigle. From there, a mountain road climbs through the vineyards and forests of Ollon and Huémoz to the plateau.
The last part has bends and climbs steadily, but it is wide and well maintained. In winter it is cleared early in the morning; our vehicles run on winter tyres with chains on board. There is no border to cross when you leave from the Swiss side of Geneva Airport.
Winter: skiing at Villars, Gryon and Les Diablerets
The ski area spreads from the Bretaye plateau, reached from the village by cog railway or gondola, across to Gryon and, by a link, to Les Diablerets. Most runs are blue and red, which makes it ideal for families and intermediate skiers. The Les Chaux sector above Gryon and the link to Les Diablerets add variety, and the Glacier 3000, a short drive away, offers high-altitude skiing.
Ski schools teach children and adults in several languages, and the village has a skating rink and sledging runs for days without skis.
Summer: walking, golf and fresh air
In summer, Villars becomes a base for walks of every level. The lakes of Bretaye and Chavonnes are easy outings for families, and longer trails lead towards the Chamossaire and its panorama over the Alps and Lake Geneva. The village has an 18-hole golf course on the plateau, mountain-bike trails and tennis courts.
The boarding schools
Villars is known worldwide for its international boarding schools. Students arrive at Geneva Airport from many countries, often with large trunks, sports equipment and music instruments. We regularly drive students and parents between the airport and the schools, at the start and end of terms and for weekend outings, with chauffeurs used to young passengers and to the schools' arrival procedures.
What to see around Villars

At the table
Vaud cooking means local cheese, fondue, cured meats and the white wines of the Chablais vineyards around Aigle and Yvorne, just below the village. Mountain restaurants on the plateau serve generous dishes; the village has restaurants for every budget.
Advice by type of traveller
Students and parents. Tell us the school name, the number of trunks and any instruments or sports bags; we will choose a V-Class or a Sprinter.
Families. Book child seats with the children's ages. The short, simple route makes Villars easy with young children.
Weekend skiers. Friday evening arrivals and Sunday afternoon returns work well; allow margin on busy weekends.
Golfers. Golf bags travel easily in a V-Class.
Vehicle, luggage and equipment
A Mercedes E-Class suits one to three passengers with suitcases; the S-Class offers the most comfort. With skis, trunks or golf bags, the V-Class is the right choice, for up to six or seven passengers. For larger groups or school groups, the Sprinter is available on request.
