Geneva at a glance

Geneva is a small city with a big international role. Around 200,000 people live in the city itself, yet it hosts the European headquarters of the United Nations, dozens of international organisations, hundreds of NGOs, private banks, trading houses and the great names of Swiss watchmaking. Visitors arrive from every continent, often for a meeting, a conference or a few days of business, and they want to reach their hotel quickly and calmly.

The city curves around the end of Lake Geneva, where the Rhône leaves the lake. On the right bank lie the station, the hotels of the Quai du Mont-Blanc and, further north, the international district. On the left bank stand the Old Town on its hill, the shopping streets and the parks along the water. In the middle of the harbour, the Jet d'Eau sends its column of water high into the air.

For Geneva Transfer Booking, the trip from the airport to the city centre is the most frequent of all: short, but often decisive for the first impression of a stay.

From the airport to the city centre

Geneva Airport is only a few kilometres from the centre. Google calculates about seven kilometres and fifteen to twenty minutes without traffic to the lake quays. At rush hour, on weekday mornings and late afternoons, or during big conferences and exhibitions, the same trip can take longer; your chauffeur chooses the route according to the traffic.

The airport has a Swiss side and a French side. Most passengers arrive on the Swiss side, and the trip to the city stays entirely in Switzerland. If you arrive on the French side, tell us when booking: the meeting point is different.

Your chauffeur waits at arrivals with a name sign, follows your flight and helps with the luggage. At the hotel, the car stops at the entrance and the luggage goes to the reception.

A short history

Geneva grew from a Roman settlement at the crossing of the Rhône. In the 16th century, the city adopted the Protestant Reformation and welcomed John Calvin, which earned it the name of "Protestant Rome". Every December, Genevans celebrate the Escalade, which commemorates the night in 1602 when the city repelled a surprise attack by the Duke of Savoy's troops.

In 1863, the founding of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva marked the beginning of the city's international vocation. After the First World War, the League of Nations chose Geneva, and its Palais des Nations later became the European headquarters of the United Nations.

The international district

North of the station, the international district gathers the Palais des Nations, the World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization, the Red Cross, permanent missions and conference centres. Access to some buildings requires security checks and specific drop-off points. Our chauffeurs know these entrances and the procedures for delegations, and we can coordinate several vehicles for official visits.

When to come

Geneva is a business city all year. Large conferences, international sessions and trade fairs fill the hotels at certain times, especially in spring and autumn; during these periods, booking your transfer early is recommended. Summer brings the Fêtes de Genève and swimming in the lake. December brings Christmas markets and the Escalade. Winter is also the season when many travellers pass through Geneva on their way to the ski resorts.

What to see in Geneva

  • The Jet d'Eau, the symbol of the city, in the harbour.
  • The Old Town, with St. Pierre Cathedral and its towers overlooking the lake.
  • The Reformation Wall in the Parc des Bastions.
  • The Palais des Nations and the Broken Chair monument on the Place des Nations.
  • The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum.
  • Carouge, a small town with Italian-style squares, artisans and cafés.
  • The Bains des Pâquis, a public bathing spot on the lake, popular all year.
  • CERN, near the airport, with its visitor centre and exhibitions.

At the table

Geneva's cuisine reflects its position between Switzerland and France: lake perch fillets, longeole sausage, cardoon gratin in winter, and wines from the Geneva countryside, one of the largest wine-growing cantons of Switzerland. The city also offers international restaurants of every kind, from simple brasseries to renowned tables.

Advice by type of traveller

Business travellers. Book the transfer with your flight number; your chauffeur follows the landing time. For meetings in town, an hourly booking keeps the car and chauffeur available between appointments.

Delegations and conferences. Tell us the number of delegates and the venues; we coordinate the vehicles and the arrival times.

Families and leisure travellers. Ask for child seats with the children's ages. Geneva is compact and easy to visit; a private driver is useful for excursions around the lake.

Late arrivals. Taxis can be scarce late at night; a booked chauffeur waits for you whatever the time.

Vehicle and luggage

A Mercedes E-Class suits one to three passengers with suitcases and is the usual choice for business trips. The S-Class offers the most comfort and discretion. The V-Class takes up to six or seven passengers with luggage, ideal for families and small groups. For larger groups, the Sprinter is available on request.
